Can Massage Help Athletic Recovery? What New Research Shows

Athletes have relied on massage therapy for decades to help prepare for competition, recover from training, and maintain physical performance. Recent research continues to support what many athletes and active individuals already know firsthand: massage can be an effective recovery tool.

Two studies highlighted in the Summer 2026 issue of Massage Therapy Journal examined how massage therapy may support muscle recovery, flexibility, strength, and athletic performance.¹ ²

Massage and Muscle Recovery

One study investigated how massage therapy compared with other recovery methods following strenuous exercise. Researchers evaluated participants after workouts designed to create muscle fatigue and soreness.

The results suggested that massage therapy may help support recovery by improving circulation, reducing muscle stiffness, and enhancing perceived recovery following exercise. Participants receiving massage demonstrated favorable recovery markers compared with passive rest alone.¹

While athletes often focus on training harder, recovery is where the body adapts and rebuilds. Massage may help support that process by encouraging blood flow to fatigued tissues and helping reduce post-exercise discomfort.

Flexibility and Performance Benefits

Another study explored how massage techniques affected flexibility, strength, and muscular endurance in healthy adults.

Researchers found improvements in hamstring flexibility following massage interventions. While the study did not show significant changes in measures of strength or endurance, the flexibility gains suggest massage may be a useful addition to warm-up or recovery routines, particularly for activities requiring mobility and range of motion.²

What This Means for Active Individuals

The benefits of massage therapy are not limited to elite athletes. Weekend warriors, runners, golfers, cyclists, and anyone who engages in regular physical activity may benefit from incorporating massage into their recovery plan.

Potential benefits may include:

  • Reduced muscle soreness

  • Improved flexibility and mobility

  • Enhanced circulation

  • Better recovery between workouts

  • Reduced muscle tension

  • Improved overall physical comfort

As research continues to evolve, evidence increasingly supports massage therapy as a valuable component of a comprehensive wellness and recovery strategy.
