Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a gentle massage technique designed to encourage the movement of lymphatic fluid through the body. At Massage Refresh in Decatur, Texas, I offer MLD for clients who may be experiencing swelling or fluid retention, as well as those looking for a lighter, deeply relaxing approach to massage. Whether you live in Decatur or the surrounding Wise County community, understanding how MLD works can help you determine whether it may be appropriate for your needs.

What Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage?

Manual lymphatic drainage is a specialized massage technique that uses very light, rhythmic movements to encourage the movement of lymphatic fluid. The lymphatic system is a network of vessels, nodes and organs that helps maintain fluid balance in the body and plays an important role in immune function. Unlike deep tissue massage, MLD works with the lymphatic system rather than focusing primarily on muscles and other soft tissues.

The technique uses gentle pressure and specific hand movements intended to encourage lymphatic fluid toward areas where it can drain normally. MLD is commonly used to help manage certain types of swelling and may also be recommended as part of recovery following some surgical procedures. Because the appropriate use of MLD depends on a person's health history and circumstances, it isn't the right technique for everyone.

How Manual Lymphatic Drainage Supports Wellness

The lymphatic system plays an important role in maintaining fluid balance throughout the body. When lymphatic fluid doesn't move efficiently, swelling can occur. Depending on a person's health history and needs, MLD may be used to help encourage lymphatic flow and manage certain types of swelling.

MLD may be beneficial for:

  • Managing certain types of swelling and fluid buildup: MLD is commonly associated with the management of lymphedema and may be appropriate for some clients experiencing post-surgical swelling.

  • Supporting recovery after certain procedures: MLD is sometimes recommended following surgery when appropriate and with guidance from a healthcare provider when necessary. For more about the role massage may play during recovery, read about massage therapy following abdominal surgery.

  • Providing a gentle alternative to deeper massage: Because MLD uses very light pressure, it offers a different approach for clients whose needs aren't suited to deeper massage techniques.

  • Promoting relaxation: The slow, rhythmic nature of MLD can make the experience deeply relaxing for many clients.

  • Addressing individual needs: As with every service at Massage Refresh, whether MLD is appropriate depends on the client, their health history and what they hope to accomplish from the session.

What to Expect During an MLD Session at Massage Refresh

As with every massage at Massage Refresh, an MLD session is customized to the person on my table. Before we begin, we'll discuss your health history, what you're experiencing and what you're hoping to get from the session.MLD uses light, precise and rhythmic movements rather than the deeper pressure you might associate with traditional massage.

Depending on your needs, I may work with areas such as the neck, abdomen, arms or legs to encourage the movement of lymphatic fluid.Because the technique is so gentle and rhythmic, many clients also find MLD deeply relaxing. Don't mistake lighter pressure for less purposeful work. The light touch is an important part of the technique.

Our MLD add-on provides 30 extra minutes to your session. Some clients describe feeling unusually light or even a little “fizzy” after an MLD session, a description I've heard often enough that I've come to recognize exactly what they mean.

Massage Refresh offers a welcoming environment with an emphasis on personalized care, so each session can be tailored to the person on my table. Conveniently located inside Zen Salon Suites at the Decatur Star Center, just off U.S. 287, Massage Refresh serves clients from Decatur, throughout Wise County and beyond.

Whether you're interested in MLD because of swelling, recovery needs or simply prefer a gentler approach to bodywork, we'll discuss what you're experiencing and determine whether MLD is an appropriate addition to your massage session.
